MELISSA NGUYEN

I discovered yoga at the age of 30 when I was introduced to Gaia Flow Yoga by an instructor, Nicole. I immediately fell in love with Gaia Flow Yoga because I was starting to incorporate rigorous physical activity into my daily life. Yoga was a great way to help me physically heal from my other exercises and the practice at the GFY studio challenged me physically, spiritually, and emotionally – it was all connected! I wasn’t good at yoga (specifically GFY style) and I wanted to stay until I got good. I didn’t realize it at the time, but it was also time to change my story that I wasn’t good enough.
Not being good enough was a consistent part of my upbringing because my well-meaning refugee parents hoped that it would drive me to work harder and achieve more than they could. I was angry, competitive, egotistical, and afraid. I struggled to connect with others on a deeper level because I was never wrong. I ruined many friendships because I expected others to live up to my high expectations. I was everywhere but the present. At one point, during a significant event in my life, I could no longer handle that I wasn’t enough. I couldn’t imagine how I could go through life continuing those same habitual patterns of blaming others for my self-perceived insignificance.

How I show up on the mat is a pretty good indicator of how I show up to life. Every time I step on to the mat is an opportunity to teach myself presence, love, and compassion. I am enough. I am loved just as I am. You are enough. You are loved just as you are. I get to choose and I choose love. Each practice is an opportunity to heal myself through love and compassion so that I may approach my world with love and compassion. Yoga is a practice. I get to do it again and try it again. Just show up.

I invite you to join me on the mat. Together, we will either find your edge of the comfortably uncomfortable or humbly submit ourselves to find presence, love, and compassion.

Off the mat, I have a BSBA in Information Systems/pre-med from the University of Arkansas, an MA in International Trade Policy, and an MBA focused in Sustainability from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, CA. I’m a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Vanuatu 2003-2005). I completed both the 200 RYT and 500 RYT teacher training through Gaia Flow Yoga. When I am not teaching, I have a corporate role implementing sustainability practices into healthcare supply chain.

Above all, I am grateful.
All my love,
Mellissa
